The club started in 2021, just after COVID, when a handful of players began meeting at Kava Social in downtown Bradenton. When the original organizer moved on, Harold Gonzalez took over as director and built it into what it is today.
Stronger players teach the rest. Study nights work through positions as a room. FIDE Masters come in for lectures and simuls. Anyone who wants rated chess can play US Chess events here.
Harold also opened the club up to the wider game — the Manasota Chess Center, the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando and University of Florida chess communities, Chess67 and US Chess organizers — and members travel together to tournaments across the state.
The league came later. For years it was just chess nights. The ladder, the brackets and the ratings grew out of the club, not the other way round.
It was never about who’s best in the room. This is a community that happens to play chess, and nobody is turned away for being new or rusty.
